Recorded mostly in Harlem, NY by the band and mastered by Vlado Meller (Kanye West, Pink Floyd, Metallica), “L&L” is a testament to the spirit of collaboration and a concept album about Anthony, Booth and Doherty’s previous band, “All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors”, whose acclaimed 1998 release, “Turning Into Small”, was named as one of the 50 Greatest Shoegaze Albums of All Time by Pitchfork, who gushed, “the album is no mere act of revivalism. Amid all the traditional shoegaze signposts-cosmically blissful riffage, demure vocals, disorienting undertow—were ambitious, dynamic arrangements and studio wizardry that sat somewhere between post-rock and Radiohead. Before shoegaze came back into vogue in the 21st century, “Turning Into Small” not only kept the flame alive, it humbly upped the genre’s game.” High praise, no?
Each of the All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors releases were recorded and produced by Alap Momin, which is how he and Merc Anthony met, and down the line, how the artists came to work together in “The Brazilian Gentlemen”. For short, the band used to be referred to as “L&L” (lemon and lime) among themselves and a contingent of their fans. There are hidden Easter eggs across the whole of the L&L album which allude to All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors, from the several times the spoken word “natural” appears, to the lyrical content, and through to the album’s striking cover artwork, which was created by visual artist Brian Azer (Jesu, Sun Kil Moon).
