River Hooks teams with The Brazilian Gentleman to form Dear Hughes!
Dear Hughes is a three piece band based in Harlem, NYC. Referencing
John Hughes, the band channels the playful sensitivity of his films and
much of the music associated with them. Dear Hughes delivers a level of
sweetness, sensitivity, and heartbreak that’s most often associated with
singer/songwriters into a world of upbeat pop/dance music. River Hooks
(vocals, guitar), Christian Alexander (vocals, keyboards), and Merc Yes
(production, keyboards) simply bring the spirit of classic 80’s synth pop
songwriting into the current landscape of current EDM/pop music.
Their first single, due to be released on December 4th by Internet & Weed
Recordings, “Diamond Heart” will leave you wishing to fall in love for the
first time all over again. Full of hooks and synths, but absolutely dance floor
ready, “Diamond Heart” encompasses everything that this group wears on
its sleeve. Not unlike The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” or Rihanna’s “We
Found Love,” they channel that era in music in a way that the listener
doesn’t need a familiarity to appreciate. Its introspective and equally
anthemic.
“Diamond Heart” fell into place one night in the studio and moments later,
River Hooks named the group. “We’re basically a love letter to John
Hughes” says Hooks as Alexander added “and all of the sweet melodrama
that goes along with his movies.” The song feels like part club banger, part
heartbreak song, wrapped up in glossy innocent optimism. “Its okay to cry
on the dance floor sometimes” adds Merc. Although this is a debut for the
group, all three have been active in other entities.
